I'll be honest. At the beginning of this year, I didn't really think we would really see this group again. AOA has always been one of my favourite groups since they debuted in 2012 with their unique concept. It was a group of 7 "angels" plus one "half angel" (Youkyung) that was part of their band unit, AOA Black.
The group has been through a few ups a downs. They charted decently in the past especially with their song Miniskirt. After that they released a few bops along the way (Short Hair, Like A Cat, Heart Attack, etc.) but after their Bing Bing/Excuse Me comeback plus a concert in early 2017, things seemed to take a dark turn when it was announced that Choa was leaving the group. This was a bit of a shocker since in my mind and a lot of others, she was really one of the vocal standouts of the group and without her, it kind of felt like AOA lost a bit of its identity.
About a year after Choa left, AOA made their Bingle Bangle comeback which was great to see. It was a decent comeback in my opinion and I enjoyed the song but I think got lost in all of the sea of amazing groups and songs that are getting released these days. After almost another year of radio silence, the dreaded time had come. Seven years was up since AOA's debut which generally means the end of their contracts and frequently also means the end of a group.
To my surprise, most of the remaining members re-signed with FNC Entertainment except for Mina. That was disappointing to see but the fact that five members decided to stay gave me hope for the future of the group. Soon after, AOA was announced to be part of a new Mnet show called Queendom and it is without a doubt that this program marked the remarkable resurgence of AOA. Seemingly a veteran group that had fallen off in recent years came in and put on a hell of a show with a performance of their hit song Miniskirt. They followed this up with an iconic cover of Mamamoo's Egotistic. In the final week of the show they performed a new song, Sorry which while the song is decent, their performance of the song brought it up to the next level for me.
Admittedly, with AOA falling off a bit on my chart of favourite artists, they really surprised me and made me fall in love with them again. Their talent. Their visuals. Everything about them is on point.
One thing I am really appreciative of in this OT5 era is the new focus on Chanmi. In the past she was pretty much brushed off to the side but in Queendom there was a great push for her with her dance performances. Now with this comeback and less members, there seems to be more focus on her with more lines and more camera time and this is just great to see. She's a sweet girl and I think she tries hard so it's good to see that she's finally getting some recognition.
And with that said, AOA finally made their first official comeback in over a year with their new mini-album, New Moon. You can check out videos of their title track, Come See Me, below. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do. I wasn't a huge fan of it at first but after a few listens, this song is a God damn bop...
